Your professional I-M-A-G-E is made up of five key components:
Impression
Movement
Attitude
Grooming
Etiquette
The I in Image is for Impression We make and leave impressions with everyone we come into contact with. Immediately establishing yourself as a credible and valuable resource saves you time and effort. You shouldn’t have to work harder than you need to in an attempt to convince people of your value and worth. A strong image reflects your capabilities, which should be apparent to everyone you meet. Make your first impression a positive impression.
The M in Image is for Movement. The way you move and carry yourself speaks volumes about you. It’s a language more honest than your spoken words. It may be easy to lie verbally, but our bodies have a very difficult time with deception. If you want to know the truth about someone, pay attention to his or her body language.
The A in Image is for Attitude. There are hundreds of things that are out of our control, but the one thing we can control is our response to what happens. You can choose to be happy, sad, positive or negative. There’s an old saying: People won’t long remember what you do or what you say, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel. If you make people feel good, you’ll be welcome most anywhere.
The G in Image is for Grooming. Your clothing and appearance is one of the first things noticed about you. Being well groomed and wearing appropriate clothing is evidence that you take yourself and your job seriously. Don’t give people a reason to underestimate your ability. Look your best and pay attention to your grooming.
The E in Image is for Etiquette. Knowing how to handle yourself at a business meeting, over dinner, or at the company party is crucial to your success. It isn’t only job performance that can make or break a career; understanding the many unspoken rules of etiquette can save you time and embarrassment.
Each image component is critical to your success. It doesn’t do you any good to select just one or two to master; each component is supported by the next. It’s essential for you to grasp each one of the five components because they all work together to help you convey a positive and professional image. It’s not enough to simply dress well and look great; you need to carry yourself with confidence too.
Your image is within your control; you can change and improve your image any time you want. Your visual appearance and your professional manner are among your most powerful and accessible business skills. Make the most of your image and give yourself every advantage to succeed.
